Playas del Coco

Playas del Coco is located in the province of Guanacaste on the North-Pacific coast of Costa Rica just about 30min from the Daniel Oduber International Airport, Liberia. it is the biggest and most important beach village on Guanacaste's Nicoya Peninsula. Even if the place is colds "Coco Beaches" it apears as just one beach which is cut in 3 parts by 2 small rivers after some rainfall. But it is also calles Playa del Coco, or by the locals simply "El Coco".

Playas del Coco is among the most well known beaches in the country and just as popular for Costa-Rican week-enders as it is for back-packers alike and beach-tourists in the close-by Resorts of the area. Before all, this is because of its great weather with an average of 250 sunny days every year. Most of the Guanacaste province lays within one of the most important remaining areas for tropical dry forest in Central America, therefore we have very little rain here - with just 1500mm of rain, even the "rainy season" is just greener- and year-round average temperatures are around 25C/85F!

Beach of Playas del CocoPlayas del Coco has raised from an important commercial fishing village to become a very popular area for sport fishing and it is primarily known as the gateway for surfers to reach world class surf-spots like Ollie’s Point and Witches Rock in the Santa Rosa National Park which are immortalized in the moovie "Endless Summer 2". But over the last decade, a new fun-activity has taken over-hand and made this busy beach to Costa Rica's prime land based scuba diving place with several dive companies set up here.

Very popular among the locals, Playas del Coco has a well developed infrastructure, with good roads and plenty of shops, restaurants, bars, discos, casinos, hotels, resorts and super-markets. You will find here a pleasant mixture of locals, expats and tourists of all types enjoying the beach-life. For this reason, nightlife here is also quite good, and if you happen to visit the area during Christmas or Easter week expect to find a lot of people here partying "beach style".

The beach of Playas del Coco itself is about 3km/2miles long with grayish brown sand. Surrounded by steep cliffs and hills, this horseshoe shaped bay area is the ideal place to have some fun. However, if you are looking for a quiet spot to relax, chose a place to stay on the Northern or Southern extremity of the beach and try staying away from the center of town, where most of the fun happens.

Playas del Coco with its wide range of accommodations for all budgets and varied facilities is a perfect location for day trips to explore all of Guanacastes attractions such as several varied National Parks (Santa Rosa, Rincon de la Vieja, Palo Verde, Barra Honda,...) and fun activities like canopy tours, sports-fishing, surfing, sailing, whale- and dolphin-watching and of course Scuba Diving.

There are many local dive sites around different little islands just 5 to 20min away from the beach. More experienced divers can join trips to the Catalina Islands which are famous for the Mantas and many other rays or the Bat Islands with its impressive Bull-Sharks!
